Conquering Stage Fright

Hey there, beautiful ones! Let me take you on a journey of growth, courage, and triumph over fear. Just a week or two ago, I found myself being invited to an open mic event, a domain I’d long avoided due to my paralyzing stage fright and insecurities. One of my oldest and dearest friends Ceshia a.k.a Queen Phierce, an accomplished poet and activist, had extended numerous invitations in the past, yet I often found comfort in the familiar confines of our cozy poetry readings at her home. But this time, something shifted.

Confronting Stage Fright: The Invitation to Rise

As my friend shared the event flyer once more, accompanied by a question, “You touching the mic before you roll out?” I felt a stirring within me. Despite the rainy weather and the perfect excuse to stay home, I decided why not.

It also gave me an opportunity to hang out with her before I go off on my adventure. Little did I know, this decision would mark a profound turning point in my journey.

A Night of Liberation: From Anxiety to Empowerment

Arriving at the venue, I plunged into the familiar rituals of setup and preparation, all the while wrestling with the nagging doubts echoing in my mind. As I began to second-guess my prepared piece, I found solace in the raw authenticity of the performances unfolding before me. Woman after woman poured their hearts out through poetry, song, and rap, each sharing a piece of their soul with unwavering courage.

As the night wore on, a remarkable transformation took place within me. Instead of succumbing to the familiar grip of anxiety, I felt a newfound sense of ease and acceptance wash over me. With a smile on my face and a lightness in my heart, I stepped onto the stage, baring my vulnerabilities to a sea of supportive faces. For the first time in my life, I stood before an audience without the suffocating weight of fear.

Healing Through Expression: A Journey of Self-Discovery

Reflecting on my journey, I realized that my struggles with stage fright stemmed from a childhood trauma, a painful memory etched in my psyche. Yet, through introspection and open dialogue with loved ones, I confronted the demons of my past and embraced the power of self-expression.

From the tender age of five, I grappled with the paralyzing fear of public speaking and performing on stages, a fear compounded by a humiliating incident during a kindergarten graduation ceremony. But with each step I took on that stage, I reclaimed a piece of myself, shedding the shackles of fear and stepping into my own power.

Embrace Your Journey: You Are Capable of Growth

My journey is a testament to the transformative power of vulnerability and self-discovery. As I stand before you today, I invite you to embrace your own path of growth and healing. You possess within you the strength to overcome the barriers that hold you back, to rise above your fears and insecurities, and to embrace the fullness of your being.

So, my dear friends, take heart in the knowledge that growth is not a destination but a journey—a journey marked by courage, resilience, and unwavering self-belief. And as you navigate the twists and turns of life, remember that I am here to cheer you on, to celebrate your victories, and to remind you of your power.

In the end, it is our shared experiences of triumph and adversity that bind us together as a community, united in our pursuit of growth, authenticity, and love. So, go forth with courage, my lovelies, and let your light shine bright.

I believe in you. And remember, as always, I love you.💙
