The Joy Habit: Meditation in All Its Glorious Forms

Hey there, beautiful ones. Let me ask you something: do you have a habit that brings you joy? Maybe it’s Friday night game night with your besties, listening to soft jazz while painting your next masterpiece, or taking those long soul-stirring walks through nature. All of those sound like heaven, right?

But for me? That habit—that one sacred, soul-feeding habit—is meditation. Yep. That simple quiet time. Before you roll your eyes and say, “Girl, I can’t sit still that long,” just know: meditation is not a one-size-fits-all practice. Let me explain.

Let Go of the Lotus Pose (Unless You Love It)

When I started meditating regularly at the beginning of my healing journey, I thought there was only one way to do it. You know the drill: sit like a pretzel, close your eyes, deep breathe for 30 minutes while trying not to fall asleep or obsess about your to-do list. I believed if I didn’t do it that way, it wasn’t “real” meditation.

Whew, was I wrong.

Meditation is personal. Intimate. It can happen wherever, whenever, however. I meditate during my daily walks—yes, walking meditation is a thing. I let my body move while my mind zones in. I’m listening to my inner being, my higher self, my ancestors, my spirit guides, and angels. And let me tell you, my spirit team? Hilarious. They be out here with zero chill, dropping truth bombs in between steps like, “Sis… you knew that wasn’t the one. But okay, we back now.”

I also meditate throughout the day by taking a minute—just one minute—to stop, breathe, and ground. Especially when life gets spicy and I find myself triggered. I pause, breathe deep, and give myself permission to feel and heal in real time. Five minutes. That’s it. No robes, no incense (unless you’re into that), just me reconnecting with me.

Wake-Up Wanders and Conversation Downloads

You know that in-between stage when you first wake up and your brain is like, “Where are we? Who am I? What year is it?” Yeah, I use that time too. I lay there, allowing my mind to drift, watching thoughts like clouds pass by. Some I grab onto, some I let go. But either way, I honor them. That soft morning meditation has become one of my favorite ways to tap into my day before the world has a chance to demand anything of me.

Here’s another wild one: I meditate during conversations. Yep. Now, I’m not tuning folks out (unless they’re talking nonsense, then maybe a tiny bit), but I’ve learned to detach just enough to assess what’s going on within. Did what they say trigger me? Was that a truth bomb? Or am I just hungry? 🤷🏽‍♀️ All valid questions.

This form of meditation has helped me stop reacting and start responding with intention. Self-inquiry in real-time? Now that is next-level healing.

Meditation Is Yours to Mold

Of course, I still do the classic meditation too—eyes closed, deep breaths, chakra cleansing sessions. Those are my sacred resets. But honestly, every version of meditation I practice helps me connect with the Universe, the Source of All, and most importantly, me.

So if you’ve been telling yourself that you’re not “good” at meditating, this is your confirmation that you’re already doing it. Meditation for beginners isn’t about rigid rules—it’s about tuning in however it works for you. There’s no meditation manual that says, “Sit like this, breathe like that, and don’t move or else it doesn’t count.”

Nah. That’s colonized enlightenment. We’re reclaiming mindfulness.

Try walking. Try stretching. Try dancing. Try lying flat on your floor listening to Solfeggio frequencies. Try that “zone out while doodling” energy. Your higher self will guide you to what your spirit needs. Trust her. She’s got you.

Meditation has become the habit that brings me joy—not because it looks like anyone else’s, but because it looks exactly like mine.

So try it. Find your flavor. And if you ever forget how powerful you are, just get quiet and listen.

I believe in you. And remember, as always, I love you. 💙
