Bipolar Disorder Without Meds

What’s something most people don’t understand?

Many people don’t understand how I’ve been able to handle bipolar disorder without medication.

The misconception is that anyone with bipolar disorder must be on meds. Actually, this is untrue.

Medications, especially for bipolar disorder, have many side effects that enhance certain things. Many cause sleeplessness, hearing voices, uncontrollable mood swings, and other uncomfortable situations.

While meds are supposed to help, they have a tendency to make matters worse.

For instance, I took certain medications that turned me into a vegetable. So, my naturally entertaining and energetic self was reduced to small shrugs and a lifeless look in my eyes.

The way I handled my situation was through meditation and awareness. Being aware of the things that triggered a negative response was the key to dealing with those things.

Shadow work is another way in which I handled my situation. By asking myself the truly hard questions and getting to the root causes, I was able to release the things that had plagued me for years.

Doing this takes time, dedication, and belief that I can be okay regardless of what doctors tell me.

While I do not suggest anyone do this without the awareness of medical professionals, it is possible to live without medication.

There has to be a firm belief in self as well as not being defined by the disorder.

Well written, I myself have experienced the “vegetable ” state while taking several bipolar meds, I finally realized the actual state the Medicines had caused me to be in , I was like a zombie , doing things in repeat everyday , I have 3 kids , I couldn’t let myself stay in that state of confusion and not actual living, just surviving, I completely stopped all my medications and haven’t touched them since, that was 20 years ago , yea I have bad days and even worse days , over time I have learned how to cope and how to survive ,

It’s wonderful to hear you’ve gone so long without the meds. Others don’t always understand it. I don’t allow myself to have bad days or worse days anymore, but that comes with a lot of inner work. If you’re ever tired of just coping, I can show you how. Drop me a line anytime…even if it’s just to have someone to vent to.
