Embracing the Mirror: A Journey of Self-Acceptance

Hey there, beautiful ones! Let me share a little secret with you—I used to be afraid of mirrors. Seriously. It had gotten to the point where I brushed my teeth with the medicine cabinet open. I didn’t like what I saw beyond my eyes. There was so much sadness, guilt, shame, anger, and self-loathing. Looking at my own reflection made me shudder in a way that wasn’t normal. But what is normal, right?

Confronting the Reflection

One of the things I’ve worked on this year is patching my relationship with my reflection. I would sit in front of the mirror and stare for a bit, allowing whatever thought to come up. I decided to finally look at myself, and once I did, it was evident I had willfully neglected my inner being. It was a wasteland of shattered dreams and hurt feelings.

I would stare into my beautiful eyes—oh wait, I never noticed how beautiful my eyes are. I began to show myself my biggest asset—my dimples. My dimples show the grandest when I’m smiling; boy, it is a sight to see. I started speaking to myself by saying the one thing I had never said to myself before, “I love you”.

Mirror Mantras and Self-Discovery

As I continued to mend my relationship with the mirror, I got in the habit of talking some things out, but the two things I said the most were, “I love you” and “Everything is working out exactly as it should”. These became mirror mantras, if you will. Now, anytime I catch my reflection, I smile and, at the very least, I say, “I love you”.

The mere fact that I spent so many years unable to look at myself or within myself is hard for me to believe, and I lived it. Having a relationship with the mirror has done wonders for my life. Nothing is hiding behind my eyes anymore—I see it all, and I handle it accordingly when the time comes. I don’t let everything rush in all at once.

Embracing Self-Acceptance

This is a skill because, at first, the emotions and feelings came flowing like a raging river. Through meditation, journaling, and quiet time, I gave myself the chance to get to know who I have been, understand who I am now, and know who I will become. It’s beautiful. I can look into my beautiful eyes and see my dimples get deeper and deeper as I feel the pride I have in myself.

I hope none of you beautiful ones struggle with the mirror like I did. I mean, you come and hang out with me, so I know you see your beauty. It’s all about getting to know yourself. I believe in you. And remember, as always, I love you. 💙
