Tame the Beast Within: Understanding and Managing Anger

Hey there, beautiful ones! Let’s dive into a topic that many of us would rather pretend doesn’t exist—anger. Yes, we’re talking about that beast lurking inside us all. Are you someone with a short temper, or do you bottle everything up until you explode like a shaken soda? Either way, anger is something we all deal with, and it’s time we faced it head-on. Buckle up; it’s going to be an enlightening ride!

The Shield of Anger: What Lies Beneath

For many of us, anger isn’t just about being mad. It’s a shield, a guard dog protecting something much deeper. Personally, my anger masked my sadness. Anytime my inner child felt threatened and sadness crept in, my anger would leap into action like a rabid pitbull. Disrespect me? Hurt my feelings? My anger was ready to pounce and wreak havoc on whoever dared to cross me.

This fierce protector stemmed from childhood experiences where I felt unprotected. So, I took on the role of my own ferocious defender. But here’s the thing: to calm this rabid dog, I had to address the emotions it was guarding. It wasn’t until I confronted the sadness and vulnerability within that my anger began to rest.

The Boiling Pot: Unchecked Anger

If we spend our childhoods hiding or holding back our emotions, they tend to boil up and out as we grow older. The older I got, the worse my anger became because I never put it in check. Unaddressed pain and sadness festered until they erupted as anger. It’s like trying to keep a lid on a boiling pot—eventually, it overflows, creating a mess.

We often develop protective mechanisms to shield ourselves from pain. While there’s nothing wrong with having an inner protector, things can get dicey when that protector has no filter and gives zero fucks. It’s crucial to find healthy ways to express anger. Sometimes, it starts with simply asking yourself, “Are you really angry, or is it something deeper than that?” This question was a game-changer for me.

Navigating Anger: Healthy Expressions

Anger works differently for all of us. I know someone who held their anger in for so long that when they finally popped, they scared themselves. Trust me, you don’t want this for yourself. Getting to the root causes of your anger can help you better navigate situations. Here’s the good news: you don’t have to let your anger control you. You can take charge and steer it in a healthier direction.

One powerful step is to practice self-awareness. Understanding your triggers and the deeper emotions behind your anger can help you respond rather than react. Sometimes, removing yourself from a triggering situation is the best response. It’s about finding what works for you and giving yourself the space to feel without letting the beast run wild.

Action Steps to Tame Your Anger

Ready to start taming the beast within? Here are three action steps to help you manage your anger healthily:

  1. Identify the Root Cause: When you feel anger rising, take a moment to ask yourself, “What’s really going on here?” Dig deeper to uncover the true emotion behind your anger. Is it sadness, fear, or hurt? Understanding the root cause can help you address the real issue.
  2. Practice Healthy Expression: Find healthy outlets for your anger. This could be physical activities like exercise, journaling, or talking to a trusted friend or therapist. Expressing your anger in a safe and constructive way can prevent it from boiling over.
  3. Develop Emotional Intelligence: Work on building your emotional intelligence. This involves recognizing your emotions, understanding their impact, and learning how to manage them effectively. Mindfulness practices, such as meditation or deep breathing exercises, can help increase your emotional awareness.

By taking these steps, you can start to tame your anger and transform it from a destructive force into a tool for personal growth. Remember, it’s okay to feel angry. What matters is how you choose to handle it.

I believe in you. And remember, as always, I love you 💙.
