Banish the Pests: Overcoming Shame and Guilt

Hey there, beautiful ones! Today, we’re tackling two sneaky emotions that can wreak havoc on even the most unsuspecting victim—shame and guilt. Guilt is when you feel you’ve committed an offense of some kind. Shame is the feeling of humiliation or distress caused by wrong or foolish behavior. Now that those definitions are out of the way, let’s dive into how these two pests can lead to self-destructive behaviors and how to overcome them.

The Destructive Power of Guilt

Guilt can be a relentless tormentor. You might feel guilty for something in your past that may or may not have been within your control. This guilt can lead you to approach similar situations irrationally. For example, if you didn’t graduate top of your high school class because you slacked off, the guilt might eat you up so badly that you become an over-achiever to the point of depriving yourself of certain luxuries and fun. On the flip side, it might have the opposite effect, causing you to take nothing in your life seriously.

For me, I felt guilt behind the fact I didn’t live up to my parents’ standards. I spent much of my life trying to get their approval, which usually put me in situations that made me very unhappy. This relentless pursuit for approval was my way of compensating for the guilt I felt for not meeting their expectations.

The Crushing Weight of Shame

Shame, on the other hand, is the feeling of humiliation or distress caused by wrong or foolish behavior. You may have felt shame because you wore a certain outfit and adults or children mocked or scolded you. This shame might lead you to dress very conservatively, or it could have the opposite effect where you dress scandalously in situations that call for more formal wear.

I was made to feel shame for being a teenage mother. I spent many years trying to prove I wasn’t ashamed by “proudly” standing in my motherhood as a protest. However, this affected how I raised my children, leading me to be a helicopter parent and smothering them so much that they fought to get out of my grasp. This shame and overcompensation created a lot of unnecessary pain and trauma in my life.

The Path to Forgiveness

The journey to overcoming shame and guilt begins with forgiveness. You need to forgive yourself for past misdeeds or mistakes. This process involves understanding the place you were in your life at the time, forgiving yourself for what you didn’t know or understand, and letting it go. It’s a tedious process, but one well worth going through.

I had to get to a place of forgiveness for myself and for the people throughout my life who caused me to feel such guilt and shame. When we learn to forgive ourselves, we lift the burden of shame and guilt from our lives. This allows us to live more freely and joyfully.

Action Steps to Overcome Shame and Guilt

Ready to start lifting the weight of shame and guilt from your life? Here are three action steps to help you on your journey:

  1. Identify the Source: Reflect on the situations or actions that cause you to feel shame or guilt. Understanding the root cause is the first step to overcoming these emotions.
  2. Practice Self-Compassion: Treat yourself with the same kindness and understanding that you would offer a friend. Recognize that everyone makes mistakes and that you are worthy of forgiveness.
  3. Seek Closure: Whether it’s through journaling, talking to a therapist, or having a conversation with someone involved, find a way to seek closure. Expressing your feelings can help you let go of the shame and guilt.

By taking these steps, you can begin to free yourself from the heavy burden of shame and guilt. Remember, we are all having a human experience, and these emotions are part of that journey. The sooner you forgive yourself, the lighter you will feel.

I believe in you. And remember, as always, I love you 💙.
