Hey there, beautiful ones! Today, let’s dive into the world of emotional triggers. Triggers aren’t about the person, place, or thing that sets you off—they’re actually about you and your reaction to them. That’s right, triggers are a “you” problem that only you can solve. Whether it’s sadness, fear, pain, guilt, jealousy, anger, or shame, these triggers can pop up anywhere and cause chaos in our lives. Let’s explore how to understand and manage these triggers to live more peacefully.
What Are Emotional Triggers?
Triggers can be subtle or blatant. They can cause you to act out of character and do something damaging, or make you retreat within yourself to the point of reclusion. Triggers used to control the majority of my life. When I was a child, I was bullied by boys a lot. Being a tomboy, the bullying came with the territory. I was also a smart kid, so that played a part as well.
This experience set off a chain reaction of behaviors that created a whirlwind of problems. If any boy or man made me feel threatened in any way, I stood tall and was very ferocious with my mouth. I actually got into more fistfights with guys than with girls growing up. This lack of trust in men led to deep-seated anger and hatred without me even realizing it. If a guy said or did anything that I felt was violating, I became confrontational.

Confronting and Understanding Your Triggers
Just for emphasis, let me explain—I am 4 feet 11 inches tall, yet I would stand up to men beyond 6 feet tall as if I were their height and build. This confrontational nature caused way too many problems in my life.
I also grew up in an era where adults felt they could say whatever they wanted to me. As I grew up, I refused to let anyone talk to me in any kind of way. My anger, sadness, and fear were all triggered in these situations, and I handled those triggers poorly. I had to learn to put myself in check, even if the thing that triggered me was standing right in front of my face.
Healing and Moving Forward
Learning to manage your triggers is crucial for personal growth. I discovered the art of walking away, living and letting live, and observing rather than reacting. These practices helped me combat my triggers. Now, I don’t get triggered by much, and if I am triggered, I know it’s something within me that needs healing. Once again, triggers are about you, and until you go within and heal what triggers you, you will always be an easy target.

Action Steps to Master Your Triggers
Ready to take control of your emotional triggers? Here are three action steps to help you on your journey:
- Identify Your Triggers: Pay attention to what sets you off. Is it a certain tone of voice, a specific topic, or a particular situation? Knowing your triggers is the first step to managing them.
- Reflect and Understand: Once you’ve identified your triggers, reflect on why they affect you so deeply. What past experiences are they connected to? Understanding the root cause can help you address and heal the underlying issues.
- Practice Mindfulness and Self-Control: When you feel a trigger coming on, practice mindfulness. Take deep breaths, count to ten, or remove yourself from the situation. Over time, these practices will help you respond more calmly and rationally.
By taking these steps, you can start to lift the burden of emotional triggers from your life. Remember, we are all having a human experience, and these triggers are part of that journey. The sooner you learn to manage them, the more peaceful and fulfilling your life will become.
I believe in you. And remember, as always, I love you 💙.
